Limited Company Tax Planning

What matters most for limited companies right now

Corporation tax rates & deadlines

Corporation tax is due 9 months and 1 day after your company’s year end, with the return itself due 12 months after. The main rate is 25% on profits over £250,000, with a small profits rate of 19% below £50,000 and marginal relief in between. We calculate and file this for you well ahead of the deadline.

Salary vs dividends

Most directors take a low salary up to the National Insurance threshold, then top up with dividends, which are taxed more favourably than salary but do not reduce corporation tax. The right split depends on your other income and how much you need to draw. We review this every year.

Companies House filing obligations

Every company must file a confirmation statement at least once a year and annual accounts within 9 months of the year end. Missing these deadlines results in automatic penalties and, eventually, company strike off. We track every deadline so nothing is missed.

Should you incorporate?

If you are currently a sole trader, incorporating can reduce your tax bill once profits reach a certain level, but adds reporting requirements and cost. We model both scenarios using your real numbers before you decide.

Limited Company Tax Guide

Common questions from directors

How much does a limited company accountant cost?

Our fixed fees start from £35 + VAT a month for a small company, covering annual accounts, corporation tax and ongoing support. The exact fee depends on your turnover, transaction volume and whether you need payroll or VAT included.

Do I need an accountant for a limited company?

It is not a legal requirement, but company accounts and tax returns have to follow specific formats and deadlines, and mistakes can be costly. Most directors find an accountant more than pays for themselves in time saved and tax planned for.

What’s included in annual accounts?

Statutory annual accounts include a balance sheet, profit and loss account (for smaller companies this can be abridged), and notes to the accounts, filed with both Companies House and HMRC as part of your corporation tax return.

When is corporation tax due?

Corporation tax is due 9 months and 1 day after your company’s accounting period ends, while the tax return itself is due 12 months after the year end. We calculate your liability early so there are no last minute surprises.

How do I pay myself tax efficiently?

Most directors take a low salary up to the National Insurance threshold and draw the rest as dividends, which are taxed more favourably. The right balance depends on your other income and personal circumstances, and we review it every year.

Do I need to file a confirmation statement?

Yes, every limited company must file a confirmation statement with Companies House at least once every 12 months, confirming your registered details are up to date. We track this deadline for you alongside your accounts.
